Bringing design and engineering firms into space work

We map what a firm already does well against what space programs need, and show where its methods transfer and where they break.

Why it matters

Most of what space needs already exists on Earth

Habitats, interiors, structures and materials are problems design and engineering firms solve every day. What changes in space is the set of constraints: mass, volume, radiation, closed-loop life support and the human body in reduced gravity.

We help firms build credible space work on their existing practice, starting from the competencies they already have.

01

Capability mapping

Mapping a firm’s competencies against NASA’s technology taxonomy to find transferable work and pilot technologies.

02

Space architecture

Habitat and interior design, crew quarters and accommodations, and soft architecture and furniture.

03

Lunar and analog habitats

Design for the lunar surface and for the analog sites where habitats are first tested.

04

Materials and biology

How material-ecology methods hold up under mass, radiation and life support constraints.

Biosphere 2 in Oracle, Arizona
Analog habitatsJul 2021 – Jan 2022

Interior design scoping for a regenerative analog habitat

After a site visit on July 16, 2021, prepared an initial design breakdown for the Space Analog for the Moon and Mars: preliminary interior concepts, simulation approaches, scope and contract structure.
