Food explorations for life in orbit

Context

Eating is one of the few daily rituals that ties a crew to home. Yet space food is still engineered around shelf life, mass, and logistics far more than around experience — and on long missions, appetite, morale, and social connection all suffer for it.

Approach

Food Explorations treats eating in microgravity as a designed human experience. We explored how texture, aroma, ritual, and presentation can survive without gravity, and how the galley and the act of sharing a meal shape mood, appetite, and the social fabric of a crew.

Outcome

A set of design directions for making food in space a genuine source of comfort and connection, rather than mere nutrition — and a reminder that habitability is built as much at the table as in the structure.
